Asking the Right Questions

Tools to Get Your Team Talking.

Does your team prefer to look at What's NOT working well first (Problem solving), or do they like to celebrate What IS going well and create improvements from there?

Since we are all wired differently, each team has a way that suits their flow.

If you ask a team that has a high need to point out issues, to look at the positives straight up, they can shut down. Likewise, if you have a team that is "Mooving & Grooving," they may like to acknowledge what's making them tick now, before they can think about opportunities to grow.

I use the HOW / WOW / NOW model to elicit some fantastic ideas for further growth.

I start the workshop with a Wild Card icebreaker from The Emotional Culture Deck from riders&elephants to get the team exploring potential emotions in the workplace.

Then I ask:

- HOW are things at the moment? What is working well?

- What steps can we take NOW? What is our E.B.I. factor? (Even Better If.. Denise Hartley-Wilkins CFHRNZ, ICF ACC, MCIPD )

- What do we need to achieve our WOW level? A.W.E? (And What Else? 📚 Michael Bungay Stanier )

It's such a rewarding experience to see ideas flowing in a way that empowers the team to grow and innovate.

Follow on from this with a poll for the V.O.P. (Voice of Our People) of which improvements matter most to the team and then set up task management teams for accountability.

Food for thought: “A ship is safe in the harbour, but that is not what a ship was built for.” (William H Shedd)

*Tip - Mentimeter is a great tool for running anonymous polls.

** For even more in-depth engagement & decision making consider doing a S.W.O.T. Analysis on the top five. (There's nothing like inaction to curb future creativity and innovation!)
